Grocery deliveries

I've given items back to Tesco drivers for a variety of reasons. Such as an unacceptable substitution, a damaged item or the wrong item delivered......as well as an occasional change of mind (usually because I forget to edit it off the order). Sometimes the refund comes through automatically, other times I've had to make a phone call to get it.
If I don't notice the damaged item or incorrect item until after the driver has left, it's always been refunded without quibble when I ring (and I get to keep the item). Is it worth ringing for a refund if there's a rotten apple in a bag of apples? Maybe not, if you're too busy. But if a large bottle of the wrong laundry detergent is brought, I would definitely be ringing.

Not sure about that? There has to be a cost involved and I'd assume the bosses would frown upon lots of returns from one individual?!
I've never given anything back, apart fron one instance when I was given goods that weren't on my order!
I always have a chat with the drivers and will ask them about this the next few times.
 
I remember one driver telling me about a customer who used to order the Tesco own brand equivalent of Baileys. He was hoping it'd be unavailable and he'd get the branded Baileys instead as a substitute. If the own brand product was delivered, he'd hand it back - even though it's exactly what he ordered!
 
I dont understand the economics for the supermarket. I see their staff doing the picking every week, the extra cost must be close to an hours labour in the store and getting it to truck. Then the delivery driver and van cost. Maybe this is why the general cost has gone up for regular shoppers.
 
Let's say 17 euro per hour with taxes, sick and holiday pay. etc all in. That's a lot of extra overhead on a 150 euro shop ( which may be 120 after vouchers)

Not in the likes of Lidl and Aldi.

Edit: Lidl and/or Aldi used partner with Buymie, Just Eat, Deliveroo (and the latter staff did all the work from picking goods to delivery) but it looks like they both no longer partner this way? I think it may have mainly been a COVID era thing with them.

I genuinely have never come across a friendlier more helpful bunch than my local Tesco delivery drivers. They even love my dog, despite the fact that he hates vans and makes his views very clear

No issues with returning items
Recently an expensive item I bought wasn’t delivered , which is a very rare mistake. I rang customer service and was immediately refunded
 
The economics are pretty simple, you can service a lot more customers with a smaller footprint, it's nothing to do with increased costs for regular shoppers

What is the smaller foot print ? Dunnes stuff are picking in store just like me. The cost has to be passed on somewhere. The delivery charge doesn't cover it as I see.
