good tradesmen for housebuild

I can understand to a certain degree where Moonman is coming from. I did a house extension last year and had a very dismal experience with Irish builders who came to look at the property. They did not turn up on time, they would not give me written quotations, were put off when I mentioned an engineer etc. Some promised to give quotations within 2 weeks but I never heard from them. My partner is in the business and she too has had terrible issues with Irish tradesmen. In her case, not finishing off work, not giving invoices for complete work, not turning up for jobs etc. The list is endless.

In the end I hired an Eastern European team of builders and they worked out fine - gave me a contract, written quotation etc., turned up for work and finished the job on time.

Perhaps you should have asked for tradespersons that offer better value, rather than tradespersons from a particular ethnic group?
 
Many of the Irish tradesmen I used in my house build employed eastern europeans in their team (blocklayers, plasterers etc) and the Irish 'boss' often told me that the eastern europeans were more conscientious workers than their Irish equivalents. I didn't particularly care as long as the price and quality were right.

I think some of you are being a bit hard on Mooneman.
 
There is a general impression among friends of mine who have had work done, that the Eastern Europeans seem to appreciate the work more. Their quality seems to be every bit as good. They stay until the job is done.

There are great Irish tradesmen, but there seems to be more Irish cowboys. They don't show up. They move onto another job before they finish. Some Irish tradesmen (and businesses generally?) got fat during the boom and let their standards slip.

I wouldn't select on the basis of nationality. I would do so on the basis of recommendations from trusted friends. Eastern Europeans are featuring more and more in these recommendations.

After that it has been about how the OP has asked for tradesmen but especially East Europeans.

I have nothing against anybody who wants to use East Europeans or anybody else for that matter but I do have a problem with people suggesting on a public forum they would prefer East Europeans to Irish tradesmen, if it ok to ask for East Europeans why not specify skin colour or sex.
 
Just to add to that. I'm sure there are very good tradesmen from all round the world but If I was doing any work I would certainly look to getting someone who was around before the boom and who will be around after this recession. A lot of so called trademen are leaving now when the going is getting tough and certainly wont be around shoud you require a call back in 12 months time.
 
surely it should'nt matter where they come from as long as the work is done right,In fairness he was only asking a question.
 
built extension recently,irish blocklayers ,english roofer,irish electricians,scottish plumbers,polish plasterers.excellent work done by all trades and all recommended from people who had them do work also.painting any nationality with the one brush is absolute bull.
