Getting water into tank in attic

Hi All
I am getting some mains water at my kitchen but the pressure is not enough to fill the tank in the attic - I have the use of a submersible water pump, have filled a 80 gallon bin brought a hose from this into the tank turned on the pump but I am not getting anywhere.

Any one any ideas on the best way to go about filling the tank leaving out the obvious manual way.

Thanks

You may need to prime the hose going into or coming out of the pump i.e. fill water in each before switching on.

probably too late but are you sure that the pump has the power to pump up the required height? This could be checked by bringing the outlet side of the hose to the same level as the barrel, and gradually raising it to see if there's a problem with power or flow.

If there is a problem you might need to raise the water to an intermediate level.

Our water was on for about 3 hrs today but still no water in tank - assuming its the lack of pressure. Am i right in thinking that tomorrow the tank should fill up as there will be no restrictons on water pressure after 2 pm tomorrow in alot of areas?

My son is already using a pump on his driller. Every foot requires approx 1/2 psi to lift it ie. 20ft = 10 psi

Sorry Roker but Im missing something here....but whats a "driller"?

Just a http://www.amazon.com/Drill-Powered-Water-Pump-Garden/dp/B003EB6YHA (pump) you attach to an electric drill. Drill provides the power. Cheap alternative for occasional use.

Thanks Leo!

So its a "Drill Powered Water Pump" which you can connect to a garden hose.

They seem to cost about £10stg.

I would seem to me that if you intend using one of these to fill an attic tank you should check the rating of the pump (in terms of flow rate and head). Remember that at higher flow rates in smaller pipes there willl be head loss even when not lifting the water.

Rael, What is the rating of the sub pump (flow rate and head)?

folks, been filling the tank now for the last week with buckets from the kitchen sink. Usually 5-6 buckets a day does the trick. Also keeping a bucket by the toilets to use that to flush to save the trip to the attic.
If you keep it topped up to a decent level then 5-6 buckets a day should do the trick for the avg family.

Remember, if its yellow, let it mellow, if its brown, flush it down
