Getting power to self build??

Can anyone give me some guidelines on getting power to a self build site?

Would it be better to buy a diesel or petrol generator or is it better to hire one out? What size of generator is needed?

Apply to ESB as soon as possible ! they will send out engineer and they will decide if extra pole etc is needed and they put it in at their lesiure. once 1st fix electrics are done then get channel dug from house to pole and have cable put in and electrican to sign off on work then ESB will connect you, you can have a wanddering socket inside for power whilst the rest of the building is not "turned on". Before that you may be able to get power but you need to apply ASAP, all my tradespeople either had generator or ran a cable from nearest house.
