I'm a total novice, but how do you get your own well, in general do the drilling peeps do the full installation? or will I need a plumber/electrician.
do they provide the pump etc, what kind of structure do you have to put around it?
Sorry for asking such simple questions.
I know costs vary on how far down the water is but if i could get a ball park ....

You will need plumber and sparks. On an ongoing basis you may need water softner, which means salt etc.

I am assuming that you have your own house on a private site.
To ensure that you get the best possible water source it is a good idea to get a diviner out to find the best location(s).He may give more than one good spot.If you have your own septic tank you have to be a minimum distance from this.In the old reg.s this minimum distance was 30m.A client has recently received planning and the minimum distance on her plans is 100m.I am not sure if the reg.s have changed or if it is on a site-by-site basis.

Once you have chosen a spot you will require the following:
- a well boring machine to drill and line the well
- the well sterilised and capped and the pump fitted. The pump will need an electrical supply. The pump will also have to be kept dry so therefore will need to be in doors.Personally I built a small pump house around the well. The other option is to run the water pipe from the well to your garage and leave the pump there.
- The general rule where I come from is to let the well run constantly for a week and allow the water drain into your surface water/roof water line.
- You should then test the water and get any water filter fitted. It is rare that the well water will be 100% ok without treatment.
- Then connect the water to the house.

In terms of cost my personal quotes are:
€1,600 for 130 deep well fully lined - this will depend on your ground type.
€1,000 for sterlising the well and fitting the pump
€1,850 for two water filters as my well water is high in iron, manganese, hydrogen sulphide (cannot be measured but you get a rotten egg smell from the water) and medium hardness.

You can get companies to drill the well and fit the pump.Personally I found that getting them done seperately was cheaper. Most well drilling companies now also do the water filters. In this case they would test the water themselves and recommend the water filter required.I would advise that you also take a water sample at this stage get it tested independently and check results with theirs (they may not test for everything). If you are fitting a water filter ensure that there will be no payment until the water has been tested at your kitchen tap two months after the filter is fitted. This will give an accurate check that the filter is doing it's job.

Whats involved in sterlising a well ???

does anyone know what the current regs are distance wise from the septic tank?

Also a neighbour os mine has 4 horses in a shed on the site next to mine, his site is more on the elevated side of the hill we are on. |I am worried this may cause problems with a well when i dig.

I need to keep away from the horse shed on one side and the septic tank on the other

Any advise!!
