getting deferal on loan

my husband is out of work and on social welfare for the last 9 months he is now enrolled to go back get his leaving cert and hopefully get something out of it , he has loans in his own name from before we were married, can he look for a deferal until he is finished school? (he didnt have payment protection) will the interest keep building up then? or what way does it work? also is he considered a student for banking purposes now?

He can ask, banks will require detailed income and expenditure forms filled and may or may not offer some options based on the figures. A full break from repayments is not likely to be their first offering, interest in general will continue to accrue even if they do give a break.
