Getting australian visa

Does anyone know what's involved in getting an australian visa as a working professional. I'm not eligible for the 12 month backpacking one.I am an IT skilled professional - aged 32.I see my skill sare on the skills shortgage list that is on teh australian webpage.Do i have to get sponsorship before i go over?Or can i get the visa based on my education/experience and then go job huntinh when oi get there?

I'm 32 - 30 is the max i believe.Plus - i did that already and i think you're only allowd one of those(may be wrong on that one though)
 

They have a points system- you get points for speaking english if they need you etc. You would have a good chance if you are on the shortage list- it does take quite a bit of time to get a visa though and can be pricey enough. They always seem to be looking for Tradesmen and hairdressers

Lucky you! if your skill/role is on the Occupations in Dmand List you can apply for a 'proper' residency visa from here, under 'Skilled Migration' category I believe. The rules were changed somewhat on 30th July 07, but if your skill is on the MODL list then things are easier. I think you would get the visa even faster if you have an offer from a 'suitable' Australian employer. Friends of mine did it a few yrs ago without using a Migration agent, as they had the points. It did take > 1yr though, but maybe the speed depends on how much they need you!

Or you could go on a 3 mth holiday visa and get a job down there from an employer who would sponsor you (4 yr visa), then apply for Residency through them or independently when you're actually living there.
