Georgian apt Chimney

I have just rented an apartment in a Georgian building, top floor. The fireplace is open but I have been recomended not to use it? not sure why. I would love to use it though, is there a good reason not to get it cleaned and have a go?

Ask the person who recommended that you not use it why it's not recommended.
