Gas Boiler

Guys - having problems with my Gas boiler this mornig. The house is around 5 years old - so Im sure the boiler is the same age.

I turned on the gas boiler this morning to heat the rads and hot water. I went upstairs to have a shave and turned on the hot tap - and waited for hot water to arrive - generally only take around 10 seconds.

I went back to the boiler and it was all switched on - but the water pressure was just above 0(zero) - in the back there is a nossle - which seems to be turned off by default - and seems (i think) to be the mains, so I turned it on , and it lets water into the system (I could hear it filling up) and the gauge when from 0 to around 2.3 or so - I then turned the nossle back to the off position.

Now , Ive down this before I think twice in my 3 years living in the house - but this time the boiler started making massive clanking and banging noises. I turned on the boiler to get it boiling the water and it seems to be sending hot water to the taps - but the rads are remaining cold. The noise is really really loud - so I turned on all the taps in the house and the banging/clanking noises stopped. The second I turn off the taps it starts up again.

I also noticed water coming out of my rad in the upstairs bathroom to top it off (allthough I think it had a slight leak to begin with)

There are lots of problems with the pluming in this house since I bought , but I never did anything about it. I cant have the gas boiler on at all I want to have a shower - even though its a electric shower - I also have 2 taps in my downstairs bathroom - hot and cold - but no hot water ever goes it either tap .

Any one any ideas on my gas boiler problem ? Who should I ring ? Bord Gais or some plumber ?

Could be a few things, partically blocked heat exchanger/ faulty pump.

Best visit the Bord Gais website and look a the the list of registered gas installers (RGI) you should find a few in your area.

2.3 bar is WAY too high to set your system water pressure, it should be max 1.5bar when system is completely cold.

The banging your hearing is most likely the hammer of your 3bar prv open and closing as your boiler tries to get rid of excess water (bet you your prv will not need replacing too!) your expansion vessel will also need to be checked for correct air pressure.

If your rads are not working and your boiler is only firing for hot water, and your bypass is not correctly set this may also contribute to the hammering.

What make and model is your boiler? is i a combi?

You might have a leak. we had a similar experience with our gas boiler and turns out there was a leak in the bathroom had to dig up floor all this was after plumber replaced the bolier 1st...
