Gas boiler built into fireplace.

Hi all
Sorry no idea of the technical name of the gas boiler, but basically staying in an old two bed house in the East Wall area that was inherited by a friend. To cut a long story short the house may be sold in the next 6 months, so don't want to change the boiler till we find out if we buy.
Anyway the boiler is built into the fireplace with a gas fire stove at the front. This is in the front living room.
There is a large vent on the house outside wall. The house gets nice and toasty when heat is on, when we turn off it gets cold quite quickly with the cold weather. My question is as the boiler is built into the chimney can I change the vent to one that can be opened and closed. I have carbon monoxide alarms in the room.
The draft is unreal from the vent.
Sorry for long post, I am reaching out to see if anyone else had this issue and how they got around the vent draft. Safety first naturally comes first.

Don't change that vent.

The reason you are feeling a draught through it is because there are likely air leakage issues elsewhere in the house and it is these air leaks causing your house to cool quickly once the heating goes off, not the vent.

The reason I asked the question is I can feel a gale blowing in through the vent.

I know. Now think for a moment ... where is all the air that is coming in through the vent going?

My recent gas boiler service man said my vents, which can be opened and closed, were no longer allowed. They should not be closable but should be open all the time. Am happy with that, don't want to die of Carbon monoxide poisoning.

Also, I can state that my room temperature improved dramatically when (a) skirting boards were sealed (realised this was the cause of my feet always being cold!!), (b) old front door was replaced with well fitting new door. The draft under the old door was something else! And (c) I also got window ledges sealed and window seals replaced as drafts could be felt there too. House is lovely and cosy now.
