You might want to try this: if you pull out the fridge you'll see that the little drainage hole exits to a small plastic receptacle (can't think of a better word for it!), this usually sits on top of the compressor that pumps the refridgerant around your fridge. This container could be caked up with dirst and dust, causing it to overflow. Moisture that deposits there (automatic defrosting of fridge) should be free to evaporate harmlessly away, but if the unit is caked up it'll overflow before it has a chance to evaporate.
 
Fridge repairer

Have a Hotpoint fridge/freezer which, while only three years old, the freezer part is showing signs of giving up the ghost. Not impressed. Anyone know of a refridgerator repairer or in the age of disposable everything, would it be cheaper to buy a new one?

Assistance would be most welcome.

Hotpoint themselves would probably be the best to talk to.

I have a Hotpoint self-defrosting fridge/freezer and it is driving me mad with the noise. I tried to figure out if I should get it adjusted or just buy a new one, and I think I will go with the new one and enjoy getting the retailer to take back the old one.

I too have a similar problem

Our three year old CANDY larder fridge worked perfectly well for about 2 years. For the last year, it isn't cold enough. Also, water now gathers around the ice box, freezing the ice box door shut and necessitating frequent defrosting.

We thought the problem might be with the door seal, but the thermostat sounds a possibility.

Running along the upper edge of the ice box door is a grill vent which can be open or shut. Under normal use, which should it be? Open or shut?

Where is the thermostat in the fridge? Is it easy to remove?

EDITED: Just noticed that the seal at the bottom corner of the door (near side) is not touching the body of the fridge for about four inches either side of that corner. That's probably my problem.

Is replacing the seal a DIY job? It seems to be screwed to the door about every three inches - a lot of screws! ;-_

Where can I buy a seal?

On a relative new fridge the seal shouldn't be a problem . It is more likely that the door is out of shape . Brutal force - bend it back to where it should be - is the handy man's answer to the problem .

And to Bridget : Turning down the thermostat is not the answer. You have to turn it up , that is away from " 1 " . If this doesn't help : have you tried to defrost it ? Is the heat exchanger clean / unblocked ? Checked the sealing strip with a piece of paper ? If a sheet of paper can be pushed through the side of the closed door the sealing strip is not sealing. The same goes for all doors ( and windows ) around the house .

I made a mistake. It's actually four years old. Also, when it was one year old, we had the seal replaced under guarantee. Odd, I know, but that's what the engineer diagnosed at the time.

You may be right on the point of the door not being true. But, how could that happen? Two very careful adult owners, no kids, and we were abroad for over a year of its life! ;-)

But, if it's a seal I need, where can I get one?

dinarius, the thermostat is behind the control - the knob with numbers. Easy enough!

To Gordanus : The heat exchanger is the black mesh type thin piping at the back of the fridge .It gets warm when the fridge pump is pumping the coolant through it . Air must be able all the time to flow freely around it . The bottom of the fridge must be open to let air pass under the fridge to the heat exchanger .This air takes away the heat . Don't block this gap with a skirting board .At the top of the fridge -if build in - must be plenty of space to let the warmed up air out to the room . Either by a grid ( or roast ?) in the worktop above or via a gap between the fridge top and the work top , open at the front . Again:don't block it . Min. gap width/distance is 1 inch at the top and at the bottom and 2 inch at the back .
If this does not help then there might be a puncture in the coolant pipe . Not much can be done about it , repairing/soldering and backfilling costs more than a new fridge . Only with larger,more expensive appliances this is done due to labour costs . Punctures are usually caused by people with sharp instruments poking the ice when defrosting it .

Hi

Our Fridge is set at the lowest temperature, yet Milk goes off after 2 days. The milk usually sits inside the door, but has gone off when in the middle of the fridge also. We throw out milk that is well within its use by date constantly.The freezer works perfectly.

Anyone have any ideas how we might try to correct.

I think you may be misintrepreting the temerature control on your fridge. When you say the lowest setting you may actually be setting the dial too low. When room temeperatures are low (as in winter) the dial may be set low, say 2-3. However during the warmer months, or when the fridge is full the dial should be set higher, say 4-5. consult your instruction booklet for clarification. There is an inherent danger in storing your food at higher temperatures.

Thanks for the quick repsonse, we have set it at 6 for the last few months with no luck. I should add, it is also in use since January. We actually bought it over 2 yrs ago so guarantee is out. Took us that long to get kitchen renovated.

Get a suitable thermometer and measure the temperature inside. Maybe it's not refrigerating properly because it is faulty or the temperature sensor mechanism is not working correctly? Is there ample ventilation space around and at the back to allow for dissipation of the heat extracted by the cooling mechanism? Household appliance specify the required clearance at the sides and back for this purpose. Does anything else go off in the fridge?

I dont notice it with other items, butter for example will stay hard. I will try the thermometer idea.It is an integrated FF if that makes any difference and I checked to make sure the door seal is tight against the fridge. I dont know if there is space around re ventilation. We have asked for a rep to come out.Call out charge is €70.Thks for the replies and ideas.

Have had similar problems with the above - But find it is a lot worse with Avonmore milk than with Premier Dairies milk - Now try and buy Premier as much as possible. Twho cartons of milk - bought on same day - with same Best Before: Date and the avonmore will go off faster. Dont know why - Just an observation

Dawn definitely goes off way quicker than NCF, Champion, Arrabawn or Oranmore milk (we're multicultural around here ). I never buy it anymore because even though I buy them from the back of the shelf, the Dawn milk is gone in a couple of days. The others could have a week knocked out of them. Although it has occurred to me that maybe there are undesirable preservatives in the longer-lasting ones but sure you could spend your life worrying about all that mullarky.

In the interests of balance, I always buy Dawn milk or Golden Vale ( both now Kerry Group plc.), and have never had a problem with it. There is a family connection with the company, but this would not influence me to the extent that I would be prepared to overlook something of this nature.

The switch in the fridge for fast freeze was on(did not know we had one). This should only be used to fast freeze meat or something very quickly. It is not meant to be left in the on position as it generates heat at the back of the fridge.This was turning the milk. Hopefully that is the end of the problem.
 
Hi,

Our Bosch freezer is not freezing. I have just moved in the house and the appliance was included in the sale. It's part of a set - relatively new integrated (but separate) fridge and freezer - the fridge works perfectly.

The lights are on but the freezer is not cold at all. There is a fast freeze option which makes no difference.

It seems to be properly ventilated. Should I remove it and plug it in elsewhere?

Any suggestions?

I hasten to add we've just moved in so it may not work at all.
