Hi can anyone please give me a bit of advise. My husband is looking for a career advice. He previously worked in the Police UK before returning to Ireland about 3 years ago. He does not qualify to join the Gardai as he is 36 & is too old to join them ! (His experience in the police does not count) He would love to get back working in this sector but seems to be getting nowhere. He does not have a degree or collage qualification. he is in employment at the moment but is not very happy. Does anyone have any advise on how to get into Customs & Excise, investigators in the public sector or anything that would keep in line with policing or investigations, any civilian jobs within the gardai. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Re: career advise Please

Prison Officer possibly.

I did see a Policing Analyst advertised a few months ago and as far as I remeber it was a civilian post. was the site.

Re: Career advice for Public Sector Posts

In absence of public sector jobs (see yesterday's cut-backs etc) how about a job as a bouncer? The hours aren't great but I think it's technically in the security industry.

Re: Career advice for Public Sector Posts

I know it's not a good time for public sector work, but bouncer work doesn't pay well and with a young family need as much security as possible.

Re: Career advice for Public Sector Posts

Prison Officer - we have looked into that, will defo submit application when they recruiting again.

Re: Career advice for Public Sector Posts

Customs and Excise are with the Revenue Commissioners. Think it starts as Clerical Officer.

The guards are also recruiting more civilians to do admin work again entry level grades would be as a Clerical Officer in the Civil Service, express an interest in the Dept of Justice at interview stage.

They shouldn't have any age discrimination for the guards.
They should recruit people with a bit of life experience.
Maybe your hubby should challenge it the next time the guards are advertised.

Re: Career advice for Public Sector Posts

I think I saw the Garda Ombudsman recruiting for investigators via publicjobs.ie in recent months.

Re: Career advice for Public Sector Posts

He applied for investigation post with garda ombudsman so hopefully fingers crossed something will come out of it.

I certainly think taht the age limit should be lifted from the Gardai as people with life experience are sometimes the better person for the job.

Thank you for all your replies.
