I'm thinking of going for a change of career and want to write to a potential future employer to seek advice. I've identified a person in the particular department I'm interested in. However, it's been many years since I last wrote this type of letter. My question is this: should I make it formal (i.e. 'Dear Mr Moran') or informal (i.e. 'Dear Mark')?

PS. They don't have any vacancies at the moment and are unlikely to have any for some time. Should I show an interest anyway or would this be considered canvassing?

Unless you know the person, or are on speaking terms with them, always Mr/Ms is my approach - especially if you are looking for a job!

Use Mr/Ms for sure. If someone wrote to me saying Dear .. instead of Dear Ms. Smashbox, I'd find it a bit strange unless I knew them!

Go formal, its the only way.

Excellent! I'd be more inclined towards the formal myself but in this new and casual world we live in, I thought I was out of step.

Thanks for that.

Go formal, if you dont know the person, it shows respect and good luck with the job
