Hi there,

I am filling in a Form 11 for 2020 and in the section PAYE/BIK/Pensions (2) there is a pre-populated figure (€166) against the row PAYE Tax underpaid (amount collected by reducing your tax credits for 2020).

I can see from looking at my payslips for 2020, instead of total tax credits of €3,500 for the year I only had €3,334.

Looking at the "Calculate" section of the Form 11 for 2020 it has total tax credits of €3,518. €3,500 being personal, employee and medical relief tax credit and then a credit for €10 for health expenses and then retention tax credit of €8.

My question, is should there be a reference somewhere in the "Calculate" section to the fact that my tax credits were in fact reduced by €166 during the year?

Thanks

Sounds as if your employer did not use the correct tax credits
Looking at my 2018 Statement of Liability I had an under payment of €166, so presumably the revenue got the payment back by reducing my tax credits in 2020..

During the year, your tax credits were reduced by 166 to collect tax owed from a previous year. This will lead to you paying €166 more tax in the year than you would otherwise.

When everything is calculated at the end of the year, you get all the credits that you're entitled to and are charged the €166 that you owed for the previous year. The extra tax that you paid in the year should mean that everything balances.

Sounds as if your employer did not use the correct tax credits
Why would you say that? It looks like everything was done correctly to me.

If the employer had used the correct tax credits, there would be no PAYE underpaid

However the the employee and the Revenue have all to supply the right figures so that the employer can access and use the right tax credits
