Foreclose on mortgage

Going through a separation at the moment, but received a letter from banks solicitors with regards to foreclosing on the mortgage due to massive arrears. Can I negotiate with them or has it gone too far at this stage? The arrears are due to ex having big gambling problem and not paying a penny to the mortgage. I tried to keep everything together by paying for EVERYTHING else.
 
If you are already dealing with a solicitor in relation to the separation then perhaps s/he can advise on how best to approach the lender about this matter?
