It just needs to be think enough to support your weight. you can but chip wood in the usual outlest that is designed for the attic. But what I did was use some left over ply wood (just under an inch thick) and just screwed it down. 20 years later its holding grand.

Be very careful. The requirment for spacing and joist width has changed in all new build. I would recommend that you cross batton your attic first with three by two's, 12 inches apart. Then put down your flooring. This way you wont have to notch your joists for your cables and pipes.
