I have lots of small black flies in kitchen. Very clean no scraps of food. What could they be.They sort of float along rather than fly. Would houseplants draw them? ocassionally upstairs too floating across in front of this screen. just pulled one out of air and dumped in toilet. That is what i mean they float, you could grab them sometimes

Can I get a fly killer that is not toxic to me or plants

I've noticed them too in my house, the floating sort rather than flying as you describe. I thought they were coming from the fruit bowl...

heard something on radio recently where there were referred to as fruit flies ? I just got

fruit flys

yep, I read about them too.
Just make sure the fruit bowl hasn't any ''old'' fruit in it.

I bought a few old fashioned glue things this year - got rid of all
the flys fast - I know it looks discusting and is a pain to put in the
bin but it does the trick without harming our lungs or the environment
with sprays.

good luck.

They are fruit flies.

They are either coming from your fruit basket (attracted to any soft part of fruit) or brown bin.....once one or 2 get in there, they can multiply very quickly.

Another option (especially if you have kids) is they may have left a piece of fruit (part or whole)....somewhere.

We had a major problem a number of years ago, turned out one of the kids had put some bananas into an old sewing basket which was never used. Took us a while to track it down.....but easy to sort once you get to the scource

We have these and flies in general. Seven apple trees very close to the back of the house . That's presumably the source then.
