Hello,
We have just been given our first appraisal ever in our company. Just some backround for you to understand about where im going with this. There are 7 of us working for this private company and we put in a letter for a pay rise in Feb and we have been pushed from pillar to post for a few months until we were told we would be having our appraisals this week.
We were fairly confident of some small increase in our basic as the company has been doing very well over the years and even though we have been recieving the national wage agreement for the last 5 years our work has significantly increased over the years because we have been so busy but we just did it anyway.
So, one of the lads is leaving us for good in August and when we were told at our appraisals that the only way the company will give us a rise is ifs its cost neutral to them. They said that if we take on the job of the lad thats leaving we can split his wage. We were told that we will have to work and extra 1hr 15min a day to make this up.So instead of working 39 hrs which is in our contract the company wants to up this to 45/wk. We also do a few hrs at weekends and we will have to make this up also.
The company has taken the line that as week get paid for our lunch-breaks we only work 32.5 hrs /wk. As ive never had an appraisal before what i would like to know is the day of asking for a payrise gone without giving more time to the employer? If anyone who has had appraisals were requested to do such things for a rise or am I being stupid for thinking we should get a payrise just for the sake of it??
Just a few other points of interest :is its been in our contract for over 10 years that we get an annual appraisal but this is our first, : we were told if we dont accept this offer thats it because if we want more money we would have to give more time. To me, by giving more time for more money is not really a payrise.
I would love to hear the views of you all just for my own head as Ive no idea if we are been greedy or if the company is exploiting us.
Thanks
