Hello,

We have just been given our first appraisal ever in our company. Just some backround for you to understand about where im going with this. There are 7 of us working for this private company and we put in a letter for a pay rise in Feb and we have been pushed from pillar to post for a few months until we were told we would be having our appraisals this week.

We were fairly confident of some small increase in our basic as the company has been doing very well over the years and even though we have been recieving the national wage agreement for the last 5 years our work has significantly increased over the years because we have been so busy but we just did it anyway.

So, one of the lads is leaving us for good in August and when we were told at our appraisals that the only way the company will give us a rise is ifs its cost neutral to them. They said that if we take on the job of the lad thats leaving we can split his wage. We were told that we will have to work and extra 1hr 15min a day to make this up.So instead of working 39 hrs which is in our contract the company wants to up this to 45/wk. We also do a few hrs at weekends and we will have to make this up also.

The company has taken the line that as week get paid for our lunch-breaks we only work 32.5 hrs /wk. As ive never had an appraisal before what i would like to know is the day of asking for a payrise gone without giving more time to the employer? If anyone who has had appraisals were requested to do such things for a rise or am I being stupid for thinking we should get a payrise just for the sake of it??

Just a few other points of interest :is its been in our contract for over 10 years that we get an annual appraisal but this is our first, : we were told if we dont accept this offer thats it because if we want more money we would have to give more time. To me, by giving more time for more money is not really a payrise.

I would love to hear the views of you all just for my own head as Ive no idea if we are been greedy or if the company is exploiting us.

Thanks

Do you still get NWA ????

and yes, the days are gone where you get a payrise without having to work harder....

A 19.2% (38.75/32.5 - 1:15 extra per day) increase in working hours for a 16.6% (7/6 - splitting the wage of the extra person) increase in pay (before tax)

That's a pay cut.

What's the nature of your work? Is there shift work involved?

You said that the work has increased significantly over the years - do you still complete it in your working week of 32.5 hours?

Could you be a bit more productive, get the extra work done in the normal working hours in exchange for the increase?

Cheers for your replies.
I cant be too specific but our job entails maintaining private grounds for public and members to use for leisure. We have mentioned that we will try and fit the extra mans work load into our week but if it takes an extra hr or so it could be included into overtime , we were told that by saying this we must not be giving 100% to the company during our own working day.
by the way ,i forgot to mention that the only man giving our appraisals is the general manager, who is in the company to cut back on out goings and save money.. i feel it stinks abit that he is in a contradicting role there as why should he entertain a payrise for staff when his role is to save money......

It's perfectly normal for a manager to decide pay increases and also to be responsible for overall costs. He must weigh up the factors involved and decide what you're worth (and also how little he believes he can pay you without you quiting or being unproductive).

Best of luck with things anyway.

You might want to check out if the same pay-freeze policy applies to the manager? You might also want to check out if the rates charged to customers have had inflationary increases in recent years.

There is no pay freeze - they have been getting national wage agreement increases.

Thanks for all the input from you all....
I know for a fact that the customers fees etc have been increased year on year. As to where the extra cash is going it is none of the staff's business and i dont think it would be wise for us to ask whats happeniing to it. The lads had a brief meeting and we decided that we will put a proposal to the company that we are willing to do the exiting member of staff work, but in our normal hrs and if it takes ot,so be it. Of course it will be a trial basis to see if all is happy. will let you know what the management thinks.

Well, the management finally got around to letting us know about our page rise. They said that we only work 32.5 hrs a week and we aint getting a cent from them. We were told if we think were worth more than we are we know where the front door is!! Btw the majority of the staff is on 11.50/hr so with what was said 1 of them have handed in their notice and i think more to follow. Sure you would nearly get that rate in mc donalds.
Anyway, letting you know the outcome and cheers for all the replies.
