got first esb bill today, €250 for two months, even though we havent moved in yet. i have a geo heat pump and had some work done over past month, plumber, fitting stairs, kitchen. is this high? was expecting it to be around €90-100.

New house? Perhaps the builders have been freeloading?

Old house? Perhaps the previous occupiers left a bill outstanding that rolled onto yours?

comparison might help... we live in 4 bed detached, approx 1450 square feet... 2 stories, and use gas for heating and water. Our monthly is in region of Eu75-100 for every 2 months.
So for me thats seems extremely high.

There is at least one other long thread containing some examples of ongoing ESB bills. Might be worth rooting out.

It’s an estimate, would the power tools account for a lot of this? I asked the question about running costs for heat pump when purchased and was told higher in winter, lower in summer, due to temperature. However, technically I don’t have it actually on full blast, it’s just ticking over until I move and then bring it up to the correct operational temperature, can someone tell me what sort of running cost is associated with a geo heat pump?

Read the meter and check it against the bill estimate.
Submit the reading to ESB.

If you go in to google and copy this

site:askaboutmoney.com <geo heat pump>

This will search the AAM site for geo heat pump - there's a lot that comes up. Or have a look where I've done it.

I think the high cost may be as a result of the geo thermal heat pump, as I believe that they are quite hard on electricity, no oil/ gas bill but high esb costs !!

The bill is estimated so first thing you need to do is take an actual reading from the meter. I presume you have night saver electricity which means you have 2 sets of numbers to take from the meter (top one is day and the bottom one is night). See what the differences are between what you are reading and what the bill is estimating for actual units used. If the bill is estimating 100+ higher for either day or night units used, then give the ESB a call and submit the 2 readings you have and they will issue you with a new bill. If there isn't that much in the difference then I wouldn't bother changing it as when they do take a reading and if you have over paid up to that (paid for more units than you have used) then you will get a cheaper bill. I had to take the readings for my first 3 bills before they took a reading and things have settled down now. Remember that your bills will be higher around christmas so it might be an idea to over pay during the summer to off set the bigger bills in the winter, or else if you don't want to give the ESB the extra cash then you could try to save it so you won't get stung with a big bill. Keep an eye on your actual readings incase they under estimate, then you will have to make up a bigger difference when the reading is taken.
I have a geo-heat pump and the bills will range from around €200 (summer time) up to around €500 for 2 bills (4 months) in winter (Nov/Dec and Jan/Feb). Thats how mine has worked out for the first year but I have no other bills so working out less than €2000 for the year in total for every thing. House size is over 200sq mtr dormer. Also, I'm still trying to balance out the heat settings and have a bit of insulation to put into the attic so when this is done they should come down a bit but then again the ESB prices are going up so maybe not!!!!!

thanks for that aidomoss, will open box 2moro and check the actual reading. i also have to finish off attic insulation, our house ia also approx 200sq, dormer, is 2k per annum the norm, i have fairly good level of insulation, bar the attic which will do when ready

not sure if 2k is the norm. It would depend on the house size and insulation. The only way of knowing how much the geo-heat pump is costing is by connecting a meter up directly to the heat pump and this would tell you how many units it's using. You would have to get a day/night meter. Electrican was to get one for me but I'm still waiting like I am for alot of other thing.........From talking to other people with similar size houses using oil, they seem to have average ESB bills in the region of €150.
