Has anybody any experience of fireproof downlighters? I have been told that one of the biggest problems with using downlighters is that you have to keep attic insulation back from them to minimise the risk of a fire. However over the weekend I heard about these fireproof downlighters. Apparently you can lay the insulation straight over the top of them. Are they really this safe? Anyone use them?

Be careful here, most fire rated downlighters have an intumescent strip where they connect to the ceiling board, This allows one to compartmentalise an area despite downlighters penetrating the ceiling board which could be 1 hour rated.
the rule usually is to leave 100mm 4 inches clear above the ceiling to prevent fire from the heat of the downlighter.

You say most fire rated downlighters......Are there downlights available that you can lay insulation directly on top of???
