Fire drill for children

Just wondering if anyone knows what's the best way to teach young children to get in the event of a fire during the night - we live in a standard estate house so should the kids
(a) leave their bedroom and make their way down the stairs and outside on their own (adv - they get out quicker; disadv - adults may not know that they're out and may spend valuable time frantically looking for them upstairs), or
(b) leave their room and wait on the landing so that the adults know where they are though then they are wasting valuable time; or
(c) any other suggestions

Btw, my kids are all under 10 years of age.

I bought the ladders to throw out the window and have one in each room but our two are a lot older but probably no wiser than your under 10s. Might be worth your while to have at least one for upstairs in case the route down the stairs is blocked.
 
Our kids know that if a smoke alarm goes off they get out of the house by the quickest way possible, day or night. With the alarms going off the adults would know this was happening and where the kids were heading.

We also have regular fire drills and reviews as a family, being careful of the youngest (now 10) so we don't scare her. At one point we also had small signs made by her showing the quickest escape route.
