Hi all,

By way of introduction, I am as the username suggests from Postbank. We’re just posting to let AAM savers know the results of some research we carried out recently which you may find interesting.

In December we commissioned Lansdowne Market Research to carry out a study on savings habits and trends among approximately 1000 adults in the Irish market. We intend to carry out this research on a quarterly basis in order to track the changing habits of the Irish market to savings. It will also act as a useful barometer to measure and track customers sentiment towards savings. Many of the findings validate our experience in the market to date.

Some interesting findings from the Survey are that:

· 75% of savers will maintain or increase their savings in the next three months;
· 80% of savers are confident in the security of their savings;
· 40% of people who are saving do so to provide an emergency or “rainy day” fund. Other popular reasons for saving are holidays, (15%) retirement/pension (9%) and education. Romance does not figure largely in savers’ goals with only 1% savings towards a wedding;
· In relation to savings decisions, security of their savings (43%) was top of mind, with interest rates (31%) and easy access to their money. (26%)
· About one-third of savers are putting aside up to 100 euro/month, with 30% saving between 100 euro and 250 euro.
· 64% of savers are still saving within the SSIA range, which had a maximum level of €250/month

What this survey has shown us is that the savings market is an area of striking resilience against prevailing economic sentiment. We think it’s going to be a very interesting exercise to track the behaviour of Irish people with regard to savings, particularly given the economic climate, and we look forward to updating AAM users in the next quarter.

Regards,

Hi Postbank.

Welcome to the deposit Forum. It is good to see more banks posting here.

Thanks for sharing your research. I saw most of it published in The Sunday Business Post.

Cheeky Question - Any chance Postbank will listen to 31% of customers and offer some market leading deposit rates? :) Will you be using any of this research to alter any of your savings products?
