Finding out ground heights on site.

I could get stones thrown at me for this question !

We have a site, and we had site survey carried out.

On the the map there are different site levels, and I was just wondering is there an electronic device that could be used to find out the ground site walking around different areas of the site ?

I've a strong feeling the answer is no, otherwise surveyors would not be using yellow tripods, but any help/suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Theodolite: that's the word that escapes you.

Low-tech alternative: two plastic containers, linked with a hose, apparatus filled with water; measure the difference between surface levels in each container.

Hi Padraig,

I like your low tech solution! You could use a pressure guage at one end!

A standard level and staff can be used.

Nowadays a total station can be used to map out the entire site and down load it to a drawing package.

You could experiment with those levels which transmit a beam of red light (I got one in Aldi for €15, but havent tried it out yet!) and a staff or vertically held tape.

I know the hand held garmin gekko GPS show a height above sea level but I dont know how accurate they are.
