Got water tested and shows that Iron & Magnesium in Water exceed EU levels, ph is 6.1.

Can anyone recommend a company that can provide filter to correct this?

In South-East.

Hi roadrunner,

I have the same problem as you - with medium hardness as well.I got a FE 1054 filter (& a carbod filter) put in 3 weeks ago by Paddy Butler, Clonroche, Wexford - (I am not affialiated). The filter seems to be working. The agreement I have with them is 4 - 6 weeks after the filter is installed I get the water independently tested and assuming all is ok I pay the money.

I am in the house about 1.5 years and the genius who installed the water pump put in a water filter. This filter is completely unsuitable for the task and apparently is only suitable to remove hardness.(If you want I can PM you his name so you can avoid him). There was a serious amount of brown residue in the storage tank in the attic. I cleaned it out and the there is no residue in the tank now - so as I say it's looking good.

The filter media is "manganese greensand". This sand will have to be replaced in 7 - 10 years - the main body should last a lifetime.

I had also looked at an aeration filter but preferred to stay local. The filter I have also removes sediment.

If you are not in a major hurry you could also take a punt and import from USA. Excellent prices right now and get a local plumber to fit it for you. I was in a hurry as I wanted to get the problem before a baby was born - not because the iron would hurt it but a possible lack of time after the baby being born.

Hope the helps,
Wexford dude

Expensive enough approx €1,400 all in.
Priced the filter myself and got qouted €920 (incl. VAT) from Water Solutions in Cork. I didn't think it was worth the hassle for the saving of €200 (allowing €300) for labour.

Hi roadrunner,

What are the levels of Fe and Mn? What is the hardness of the water? You should show the full set of results to a water treatment contractor (can be found in the golden pages). After you have installed the treatment a few months test again and get the contractor to adjust the filters if neccessary.

The ManganeseGreensand filter mentioned above is problably the best solution but a lot depends on the particular water chemistry in your well.

The Manganese Greensand filter can have the effect of further depressing your already lowish pH. Low pH will stip the copper from your internal pipes causing green streaks in baths and sinks. At a pH of 6.1 you probably need some kind of ph correction.

Managanese Greensand filter uses Potassium Permangante to recharge the filter. You should get a system that automatically backwashes and that does not require much user intervention.

There is another filter material called Crystal Right 100 or Crystal Right 200. It works for moderate levels of Fe and Mn but does not work very well with soft water (lacking hardness).

Is there a rotten egg smell from your water when you turn on the taps first thing? If so you may have hydrogen sulphide. The Greensand filter should get rid of this but Im not sure about the CR.

If you have really high levels of Fe Mn the water might not be treatable in which case you might have to get an alternative supply.

Ive just noticed that you say you have Magnesium in your water. I assume that this is a mistake and that it is Manganese you have in the water.

Iron and Manganese are often found together in well wate. Iron makes the water go rusty red while manganese is blue/black and destroys laundry and clogs appliances. Incidently I dont think Fe or Mn have any health implications.

I paid €599 for it on ebay.ie I like the price.

Hmmm..... Basildon, Ireland! :)

My advise is to go through an Irish Water Treatment contractor who understands well water chemistry.

The filters you describe appear to be "point of use" activated carbon filters. These are fine for treating mains water (to take chlorine, lead etc out of the water). Im not sure how effective they are in a "point of entry" situation.

As mentioned above the big problem with Iron and Manganese is laundry staining and appliance fouling.
