Our ferry to France was cancelled, while en route,,, we were returned to the departure port. The alternate sailings were no use to us. We were offered a contact number to call to request a refund which we will do.

But are we entitled to compensation? Aside from 12 hours on a ship we got nothing… our trip was ruined, as it it didn’t happen. The alternatives didn’t work for us, we had lost too many days. And would have missed the appointments which were the main point of going. Instead of a Saturday am arrival we’d have been Monday night.

The reason given by the ships officer were technical issues with the navigation system not the storm.

The citizens information page is unclear. IMO. I’ll reread it but has anyone managed to get any compensation from Irish ferries?

Oh, I see now that you've already checked the Citizens Information page. But maybe the others help clarify matters...?
 
The amount isn’t clear. Looks like 25% where there are delays.

But it wasn’t delayed.. it was cancelled after a few hours, so instead of 14 hours to France we got 12 hours out and back again and a useless alternative.

A refund is going to be offered, although we have to apply for that and they didn’t have any forms and we had to push to to get details of who to call.
 
You can't blame the ferry for the weather - assuming that the weather was the reason for cancelling it.

I don't know if the rules entitle you to compensation, but I hope that the rules are not that stupid.

I assume a refund will be straightforward. But we missed out on a trip, we spent 12 hours on a ship and ended up back where we started with a voucher for a cup of tea when all the services on board were closed…

We’ve been doing this route for decades and rarely have any issues, the odd hour here and there as you’d expect but generally it’s good. First time I think we’ve had to seek any assistance.

It is strange that delays are spelt out… but not failure to deliver us…. we never arrived… the alternative routes offered would have got us there 28 hours late (I think) so maybe that’s the metric?
 
What are you looking for beyond a refund ? Maybe the captain should have sailed on with the technical problems ...it's a taxi service between 2 points as Micheal pointed out many years ago
 
Compensation for the cancellation of our holiday. Same as if an airline never got you to your destination. We had plans for the Sunday … and indeed for the week. We’ve had to cancel them all. Monday night reservations in a restaurant for example they’ll keep the deposit we paid. We paid for various services in advance, a cleaner for the house and a box of groceries which will need to be removed now or they’ll be rancid by the time we get there,

Also if we rebook for another week, whenever that it, it might be more expensive.

We should have arrived Sunday afternoon (our original trip was due to arrive Saturday am), the alternatives offered would have been at least 24 hours late. We felt on balance that there was no point in travelling as we’d have missed the key engagements and would be returning after a few days. It’s a long and expensive trip, you don’t do it for a day or two in France, IMO you need a fair few days to make it worthwhile.

You didn't book a package holiday, you booked a ferry and then decided to cancel all your plans for the sake of 24 hours and a bit.

Airlines don't compensate you for the cost of your holiday in these circumstances. They pay the statutory compensation which is the same whether your flight was associated with a holiday or not.

This is one of the main reasons why people effect travel insurance - the insurer will pay for the whole cost of your trip if one element falls over.
 
I understand that. We have an annual policy so that’s not an issue,

However airlines pay compensation if you are more than 3 hours late, and it’s not linked to the cost of your ticket which is interesting. What’s puzzling me is that the information is all about delays, not cancellation

Yes but the primary reason for the tip was an appointment on Monday which we would have missed.

And initially we would have arrived Saturday lunchtime , changing to Monday evening is more than 24 hours,

I know some aspects are outside their control, like the storm, but that’s built into their prices.
 
But they are not interested in what the purpose of your trip was. They offered a refund or alternate sailing, maybe you made decision to cancel your full week in expectation of compensation
 
Why do you think I cancelled in expectation of compensation?

i was merely asking if anyone here had experience of claiming compensation as I felt the information online wasn’t clear,

I can help by telling you that you are not entitled to compensation for your holiday that you cancelled. This applies even if you had an appointment with the Pope.
 
That’s fine, although why I’d want to meet an old man in a dress is beyond me, but each to their own. You do you.

Now has anyone tried putting in claim for compensation based on the information published, so up to 50% of the cost of the ticket (if delayed) but not in any way shape or form related to any costs or losses incurred? And specific to having to cancel the trip as opposed to arriving late.

There are many websites assisting this for airlines but I can’t see any such for ferries,
 
I got a standard reply from them saying they will process a refund in due course.

Unfortunately the next time we can make the trip the ferry tickets are considerably more expensive. 60% more!
