Opened a window in our 4 year old house last night and it wouldn't close, has a broken hinge and has come away from the frame on the inside so it won't allow it to close. We got it closed by lifting it back into place for last night, but contacted builder today and he said contact window crowd as he hasn't got the tools to fix it. Contacted window crowd and they said there would be a call out fee to fix it as it's gone past a year!!! Surely windows should last past 1 year and there should be something this falls under to get the window company to fix it as it was obviously a faulty wiindow and we didn't brake it.

There is little point in blaming the manufactuers that you didn't open the window for four years, especially when there are no other problems with the windows.

If you search on here (specifically for TV repair) there are lots of threads about repair of TVs outside the warranty period and the issue of the "product being fit for purpose" under the consumer act. It seems one can get issues fixed outside of the warranty period. I dont know how this would apply in your situation but its something to consider.

Where does the OP say they only opened the window once in four years?

I didn't thanks dubgem, we opened the window quite regularly in the past 4 years actually as let cat in and out and also plug lawnmower in through it.

I'll check out the thread on the TV and fit for purpose, thanks for help.

I thought most windows would have a 10 year guarantee? In any case as previously advised on the TV thread it seems you have an option under the not fit for purpose rule.

You should contact the manufacturers of the hinges, usually there is a name on them or some sort of ID that someone here might be able to point you in the right direction as I assume the window manufacturer is only buying the hardware from a supplier.

The hardware would usually come with a 5 year warranty and the double glazed units with a 10 year warranty.

check your paperwork with the windows, I know ours had a five year warranty but the chap came out after six years when the ensuite window stuck and we couldnt manage to open it.
