failed exams-3rd level

Someone I know has failed 2 modules and has got a letter saying that they have to repeat 4 modules because of qca less than 2. Has anyone been in a similar situation. I am wondering if it is possible get a good enough grade when they repeat when the highest they got before was a C1. The cost of repeating is 620 euro.
 
Athens2004, I dont know the answer to your question but what is a qca? Normally when someone fails an exam and has to resit my experience is they either pass or fail. ( this is in my experience and I have no knowledge of your situation ) I think this is to be fair to the students who sat the exam first time round and were graded. By resitting later you have the advantage of more time to revise and might also have an inkling of what the questions are likely to be.
 
Any third level exams I know of have just a pass or fail on repeating and no grades
 
I'm guessing your friend is in UL, athens2004?

If their QCA* is <2 they must have failed more than two modules, or else failed those two modules with F grades and have very little to compensate in their other modules. Normally repeat exams are capped at a C3 (unless they're to clear an I-grade), so perhaps that's the reason they've to repeat other modules in which they're carrying D1 or D2s? In any case, a quick call to Student Services should clarify.

Thanks for all the replys, it seems like what DrMoriarty is talking about. I wonder though if it is possible for someone to study and pass 4 modules in the space of 6 weeks....when they had a few months already to study for them.

Re NIHED. Don't remember A-F/NG. Is my memory fading as I enter middle age? I definitely remember being told I got 41% in a re-sit of a pretty vicious maths exam in 1987.

My mistake! It was percentage ranges e.g. 60-64%, 65-69% etc. and not actual letter grades.
 
You can repeat only the 2 F's and hope gets C3's. in them to bring him over the 2.
i'd want a full breakdown of the results before i could say anymore as if his QCA was around 1.9 all he'd have to do is get D2's. and he'd be ok to get into the next year
 
Thanks Lemon, Over all his results were very bad he only got 1.58 I think dont have the paper work anymore. He is going to repeat the 4 and hope for the best............
