When I said "You are assuming that other people are as hung up as you are about having the "right" to park outside their house", I meant all the people posting that they have some sort of implicit right to park outside their own house, or that others dont have the right to park outside. OK let's forget about the legalities of all this for one moment, which I and the OP both accept are on the side of the ubiquitous parker. The OP actually questions the ethics of such parking and I don't think that anybody should park directly outside his/her house, regardless of the law. The OP also states that the individual often leaves the car there for days on end. That would really get on my nerves also.

What I will say is that the situation will no doubt continue unless you all get together and discuss the situation etc.

That's right SLF. I think. Glad we got that sorted! I had to stop reading half way down your rebuke of all my points that were in agreement with you. If that makes sense. I'll get my coat...

... but, before I go, a few question if I may, one last attempt at trying to get "the other side" to see my viewpoint.

Where do you park when someone is in "your space", ie outside your house?

If there is no common areas, as is often the case on older terraced house roads for example, where do you get guests of yours to park?

Where do you park if someone has the audacity (I mean really and truly!!) to park outside your house.

These questions are slightly rhetorical. Or maybe it is a Socratic method. I believe that most people have a rational streak, and in considering these questions you might see that your viewpoint is simply not sustainable, reasonable, fair, ethical (not sure how on earth ethics come into this, but that's another thread's work) or whatever you want to call it. It just cannot work.

I'm all for working with your neighbours and getting some common ground, but you'll never get that with a starting point of not being allowed to park outside someone elses house. Putting cones out, putting notes on cars, confronting neighbours or thinking them cheeky for parking outside your house is no way to arrive at a common ground. I sympathise with some posters whose neighbours have been nasty re knocking bins over etc, but dialogue and give and take is the best way to resolve this.

i can only join the group who gets annoyed about neigbors who think they can park where ever they want and dont consider anything else but themselves.

generally, i dont care where people park BUT my neighbor got four cars. they have a drive way (i don't), so technically they could park two cars in their drive way and two in front of their house (there is only space for one in front of mine). usually they park only one in the drive way, two in front of their house and one in front of mine. when they get visitors, they use my other neighbor's front house spot on top.
when two of their cars are parked badly, they dont even shy away to use my front garden which at this stage is badly damaged :mad:

i can't stand ignorant rude people and even though i have a life, it still drives me mad when others think they can do whatever they want. here, i like the japanese rule (if it's really the case) - if you think, you need more than one car, make sure first you can look after it and that includes parking spaces!

I would definitely be annoyed with this situation - if they have 4 cars and space for two in the driveway I think it is reasonable to expect them to park two in the driveway. I would try to deal with it, I think you have every right to ask them to use their driveway for two of their cars. While you're at it you could also politely enquire as to why they dont park their cars outside their own house when there is space there. In most cases people are reasonable and will adapt their behaviour if they are informed that they are putting you out. If they dont I'm afraid you are going to just have to put up with it.

While it is correct one can park on the public road one cannot block an exit. Also if one is parked outside a house in such a way as to prevent the owner/resident exiting/entering it may be obstruction or partial obstruction
