ESB night rate

a friend of mine was telling that he heard that the ESB are going to abolish the night rate. is this true? we are installing Geothermal heating and a major factor in our decission was the use of the night rate to power the heat pump

I am doing the same as you, esb rang me about two weeks ago and said they would be out in the next month to errect the pole, she checked with me then that I was still going ahead with the night time tariff, I said yes and she said that was ok, just checking applications.

I talked to ESB about getting on the Night Saver electricity a few weeks ago and they did not mention that it would stop.

I decided not to go for it, as it represents a significant increase in the monthly standing charge that would not be justified by the amount I would use it. Obviously if you are running a heat pump with it at night you will make a saving.

I don't understand why the ESB charge a higher monthly rate for the NightSaver package. If it was the same cost, more people would use it. This would encourage people to run washing machines / dryers / dishwashers etc at nighttime, which would no doubt benefit the ESB through reduced daytime demand.

As wage costs are huge in the ESB the customer bears the blunt.

Who cares about day time shortages, the ESB dont. They have the average wage of ESB workers of 90,000 to worry about!

A national scandal. Break em up and get competition in the market!

Let's try and keep this on topic, otherwise a move to LoS is inevitable.

ESB would probably justify the increased standing charge as being due to the slightly more complex setup required. Average 3 units or more during the night saver period and you're winning.

We have a dual day/night meter setup and have heard nothing about the latter being abolished. On what information did your friend base his/her comments?

just through word of mouth, might only be gossip too. then again they were approved to hike the new installation price this year too by something like 30%, so whose to say there might not be some truth in it

Isnt there talk of a "Smart" metering system to be introduced complete with SIM card which would allow charging individuals at different rates through the day - obviously high demand time = high rate and low demend = low rate.
Not sure if the ESB would introduce charge extra to have this meteting installed.
I agree it is daft to have additional charge for current Night Rate option. I have it installed for the Geothermal heating and it is cost efficient if set up correctly.
