Entrance pillars

Hi, Does anyone know if I need planning permission to raise the height of pillars/piers at driveway? I live in an estate, regular semi d house! I want to get gates fitted and have been advised that the current pillars are not high or strong enough to support gates. Also, the garden walls in our estate are not very secure, many have bricks missing - would the entire wall have to be rebuilt to strengthen it?

Think it depends on the strictness with which your local council operates.

Mine is a bit power crazy, neighbour knocked down their front wall and changed it ever so slightly (bit pointless tbh) and did so without planning, and were ordered to knock it down.

I would always check with them 1st just to get clarity, you dont want to get bitten later on.
