Engineering with Economics

Hi,

I am a civil engineer and I have been thinking of doing a distance course part time and I have looked at alot of different things. One thing that caught my fancy was Environmental Economics, basically seeing the effect that carbon taxes, sustainable designs etc has on economies on a micro and macro scale....I think that I would be able to utilise both courses to my benefit
I would find it very interesting but I am thinking what jobs could I get from it. Government Departments, EU etc would seem the most likely but would have opportunities with private consultants.

I would hope to bring my qualification to an MSc level as well, would this be a high enough qualification to work as an economist outright??

if anyone could give me some advice or has made a similar change I would appreciate it!!!

I'm sure private companies would find this useful on big projects especially at EIS stage

All things environmental are going to big in the fiuture. It is at last a major political issue and cars are even being developed with bio power and reduced VRT for certain eco F cars.

The whole construction industry is a huge drain on natural resources and devlopment a cures to many.
I have a friend who did Civ Eng and combined it pain stakingly with something similar to waht you describe to Msc level and he is being courted by many cos it seems to be a rlatively specialised skill in an area that is taking off.

|Dont forget the large private cos have flagged this years before the politicians started on the band wagon.

Monkeyboy,

Just as a matter of interest what MSc did your friend do and where? Also why did he find it so pain staking

Thanks JR,

The course that I was looking at was at the Imperial College London

Tailor made, the OU seems to have some mixing and matching. From the MBA thread I see that you are going for Manchester for your MBA????
