Engagement ideas other than Engagement rings?

Hi there,
I hope you can offer some advice. I plan to 'pop' the question to the girlfriend this year. The problem is she doesn't like rings/jewellery in general and apart from a silver watch doesn't wear jewellery.. I'm a bit traditional and would like to buy a ring for her, sometimes in joking (she's a free spirit), she says "I don't want a ring", but I'm sure she means it. So can anyone think of some other type of engagement ring/present which I could propose? Has anyone heard of other engagement proposals other that engagement rings? Apart from a great holiday, I can' think of anything suitable, perhaps the ladies out there, can suggest something? Any advice help would be most appreciated.

Top Tip: Just because a woman says she doesn't like jewellery, it doesn't mean she wouldn't like an engagement ring. In fact, it might be even more special because it'd be the only jewellery she'll wear.

Years ago, an expensive watch was the sign of a secret engagement.

Top tip indeed - do NOT take it for granted that she doesn't want a ring...find out for sure!
 
How about an expensive watch for the engagement and you could then put a few small diamonds in the wedding band! (thats if you know for sure that she would'nt like an engagement ring).

I know alot of people who don't wear their engagement rings in later years - what a waste!
 
I recently married and didn't want an engagment ring (actually didn't want an enagement!) I love food and got whisked away to a great place down the country for dinner and overnight stay, flowers and champagne in the room and a present of a bottle of very expensive brandy. Odd but it was perfect for me, it "marked" the occasion. I did go for a wedding ring which covered both ie a bit fancier than a normal wedding ring.

I have heard of somebody wanting a car instead of a ring, and I have a friend who wanted a painting/piece of art instead of a ring.

But as has been said, make sure she really really doesn't want the ring.....or you could regret it!

theres no better alternatives than a engagement ring, trust me if u don't offer one now, ur wife to be will want one at a later stage....

you should put some juice into how to propose to her...down ur knee with a loud speaker on Grafton street maybe? good luck man!

its a token of love, and she definitly like to show it to others.
 
Personally I never liked rings and only wore my watch every day (sometimes a necklace too but not often). It was weird wearing an engagement ring at first but now I'm used to it and feel almost naked without it! It helps that it's a gorgeous ring though.

Go for the ring but, if you can, get her to choose it.
 
IMO, ask her to marry you first, then chose what you both want as a token of the engagement together afterwards. I like the idea of a romantic weekend!
 
last night on fair city (!) someone proposed and gave the girl an empty ring box and told her he wanted her to pick the ring.
I thought the idea of stil giving her the ring box and letting her pick her own, was a brilliant idea.

I'd heard of lavish weddings, but surely good musicians come cheaper than that!

Many thanks for all your advice, especially the genuine feedback, some nice ideas there. I'm 95% sure she doesn't want the engagement ring...She doesn't buy into the whole church thing and dresses and long wedding days.. She loves to attend weddings but not too keen on experiencing on being a bride. She doesn't attend church and suggested that she doesn't want to get married in church either. So I'm thinking perhaps some wedding on a beach overseas or some place suitable....I've heard of it happening. I'll drop a few hints to her about the ring and see how it goes.. Thanks again.
 
Don't be silly. You buy her the ironing board as a wedding present come the big day. Obviously.
