Hello all out there,,, i need some advice, i have been working with a company the past 14 years( construction ) i have never got a pay increase/rise and make just under €500 a week, and half of that is cash in hand... now when i asked for rise the answer is work is slowing up and people being let go!!! should i be intitled to increase to meet inflation,, was thinking of joining a union that a good or bad idea???? any advice what 2 do next??? cheers!!

Re: Employer Ripping Us Off Help?????

Sadly when you work totally or even partially "on the black market" you have very few rights as technically you are also breaking the law (and ripping off Joe taxpayer). If you are getting half your wages without declaration are you also claiming state benefits? medical card? as you would be officially earning under the threshold for some of these.

I would speak to a union "off the record" as it were. But I don't fancy your chances. It is widely acknowledged that there is a huge downturn in construction so this may not be the time to cause a fuss.

Re: Employer Ripping Us Off Help?????

You could try contacting department of trade enterprise and employment to see if they can help but when you know your employer isn't returning correct tax & PRSI and are willing to accept employment under these terms you have to be held partly responsible for the predicament you now find yourself in.

Sorry I'm confused. Is your take home pay 495 (325 after taxes + 170 cash in hand)?

Re: Employer Ripping Us Off Help?????

For sure people are being ripped off here.
You and your employer are ripping off every PAYE worker who doesn't insist or are lucky enough to get cash in hand wages.

Hope you get what you deserve, good luck

Re: Employer Ripping Us Off Help?????

If income is being recorded as €325 there would be no tax or PRSI payable by the employee. So employer then hands €170 in cash to employee and no account of that is made to revenue. Have I got that correctly.?
It appears to me that both employer and employee are involved in something quite shady. As for seeking advice about a rise I wouldn't expect any professional person or body to go along with that type of behavior

As already mentioned both your employer and you are ripping people off by evading tax. AAM does not condone, encourage or advise on how to evade tax. Thread closed.
