Hi Everyone,

Just wondering if anybody out there knows much about getting a working visa for oz (not the working holiday one)...Do you get a job first or the visa first.??..i see on the australian embassy website theres a list of wanted jobs with points beside each... my qualification is listed - environmental health and safety and so is my boyfriends - film ad tv production. Problem is i only have a few months experience behind me and the boyfriends just graduated so cant see a company over there sorting out for people with little or no experience! just wondering if anyone had any experience of the system - dying to get outta here!
 
Having lived in Australia for nine years and had many dealings with DIMA (Dept Immigration & Multicultural Affairs) in Oz, I would strongly recommend getting your advice through an agent. I used a crowd called Consultrade based in Sydney and found the service great. Denise Jenner was the woman I dealt with and she was efficient, helpful and very informative through every stage of the visa process. I was Sydney based at the time on a succession of temporary visas applying for residency.

I'm sure there are heaps of other agents out there but if you use one, make sure they have specialists in Australian immigration issues.

My knowledge of people who applied based on the skills program is that it took a good few months to get paperwork organised and submitted and to finally hear the result but thats a few years ago now. Not sure if they process is faster these days.
 
lauren - thanks for the info, i'll look them up...any idea on what charges are involved with them? Do they sort out your visa then you arrive and look for a job?

ccraig - i've just turned 28 and boyfriend is 29...

I can't remember the charges at the time. I think they allowed me to pay in installments as the process took a while and yes given you are outside the country they would sort it out then you arrive and sort yourself out.

There are other options like employer sponsorship (i.e. u are offered a job by an Aussie company and they get your visa for you) so you might want to look at all the options.

The thing about the agent is that they won't submit an application that they believe would not be approved. They are incredibly careful and dilligent and seem to have up to date info on the latest rule changes. (At least that was my experience).
 
Try migrationabroad.com too, theyre an irish outfit that do talks in red cown inn in dublin and in cork, dublin and galway fairly regularly
