Electrician wiring my house shortly

If you are wiring house from scratch, it would be a waste not to put in cat-5. Simply run it in conjunction with your tv and phone points for example, then no additional sockets, as they can share the same socked point as the tv or phone. CAT-5 will always find a use, running it now costs virtually nothing,

A good idea may be to fit a change over switch which allows you to run your house off a generator if you live in a remote area.

We also put some outside sockets around the outside of the house - for hoovering the car etc and one where the patio area is going as you can now get electric patio heaters. Also if you are having an extractor hood over your hob maybe also for an outside motor for this as its quieter. We also put a socket in the floor - positioned it behind a couch in the living room as will put a console table there with a lamp so no trailing leads. We will also probably get a water softner and put a socket under the sink area for this. Regarding bedrooms, you really have to know where your beds are going to go in bedrooms and if they're going to be single or double and don't forget to decide where wardrobes are going to go as we forgot about this and will now definitely have socket inside the wardrobes which I'm sure won't be much use! If I think of anything else will post again.

If your planning to have under cabinet lighting in your kitchen, leave a socket up high and make sure you wire a wall switch for each type ie:cabinet, under counter, over window. We also got wall switches for our bathroom wall lights and heaters. Also put in a double socket in your kitchen island. Sockets are handy in wardrobes if you ever want to put in tv/lights etc. If you are putting a light in the attic, wire a light switch in the landing. Always put around 2 double sockets under you sinks in kitchen and utility, for insinkerator etc floor sockets are handy in the living room for lamps and speakers also pay attention to where you put you light switches, have them in a place where allows easy access ie inside entrance doors etc, don't do what we did and left it up to the electrician, god knows what was going through his head when he wired our house!!! When he is wiring for alarm, wire for a alrm box upstairs, front door and rear door also get him to wire for alarm in garage at the same time with ample sockets..put a double socket in the hotpress, very handy if you need to put in a shower pump. A socket half way up the stairs if its u shaped or split, handy for hoovering or a tall lamp..i think thats it ..will be doing this in a few months again so if you come across anymore please update post with them

Does anybody know where to buy large rolls of cat 5e in dublin or on the internet? thanks.

Young lady friend of mine got a quote of €4,000 to rewire 2 Bed ex council house in Dublin 7. Just wanted basic job nothing fancy. Worth it or expensive? House is about 40 yrs old.

for SKY tv I set up my skybox in a cubbyhole upstairs and ran cables through to almost every room so that with a magic eye you can watch sky and change chanels from anywhere ( I only use it in 3 rooms but as everyone says "futureproof").
p.s. on a different note if you are getting an American style fridge make sure you have water running to it.
