Electrician fees

New builder here!

Before any work was carried out I got a quote from several electrician as you do

I then choose an electrician (not the cheapest) as he seem to be good.
The agreed price was 5500


Now nearing the house completion he drops a bombshell of a bill for 9500

I admit that there was a few extras but this is just mad.

In a part of the bill he details labour for fitting thermostats that were supplied by the plumber charging 36/hour ----Is this he normal rate

I partly blame myself for not asking how much all of these bits might cost

Any advise on how i should handle it :mad::mad:
 
what were the extras that were done? has he broken down on the bill the costing for each extra? €36 per hour would be in and around what electricans charge?
 
The electricial contractor who wired my new build laid off his electricians due to no work so when I needed additional extra work, outside lights, garage etc, I contacted his top electrician and he was glad to get €20 per hour. Granted, I am in a country area where there is little work available.
 
working as a "nixer" anybody can work cheap. That's the black economy. With all the costs a bone fide contractor has he could not work at that price. You can only hope nothing goes wrong.

I have every confidence nothing will go wrong. No he is not a contractor but someone using his skills and qualifications.
 

How many thermostats? And how much in total for these?
 
kbie, but if something does go wrong (and it can) your electrician would not be insured so you would be on your own
 
The electricans rate set out by the labour court in 2007 is €21 per hour then add employers liability insurance, public liability, reci/ecssa membership, employers prsi, bank holidays, 9 days, holidays 21days, sick leave 7days, thats a total of 37 days paid, diesel for his van, €20 per hour wouldn't cover that, €36 per hour mite just, will he get that not a chance. so kbie's top electrican gets €20 per hour thats €160 a day, €800 a week plus €200 from the state/dole thats €1,000 a week,
 
Hey joshea some electricians make alot of money from doing "extras" they rise the cost of the labour etc.I know this cost I'm a sparks and thats how my previous employer made his money from extras.Your man was just covering himself to pay lads and pay for materials and then have a bit of money for himself thats what I reckon
 
hi joshea,are you serious, you are blaming yourself,if i was doing a job and the costing was 5,500 euro as agreed and the add ons came to almost 80% of the original price i would have contacted the customer way in advance,if i were you i would walk him around the house and mark everything he agreed to do in white chalk for the original price ,and the extras in coloured chalk then ask him to explain how that cost 4000,00 euro,it will show him your serious,it,s the equivelant of working an extra 3 and 1/2 weeks on your house without a lunch break @ 31 euro an hour,i would have no problem paying him for the extras if he was being straight but you would not be on here if you thought he was,ask him for an itemised costing for the extras,time taken and items supplied ,i would not pay this guy a cent until he appoligised to me for letting it over run that far and not making me aware of it,tell him to go away and think about his extras after the 5500,or he might have to spend 3 and 1/2 weeks removing his extras at no cost to you thombom,s post says it all really,fools and their money are easily parted ,don,t be one of them.
 
Please correctly punctuate posts. Long run-on sentences with no breaks or capitalisation are difficult to read.

36 an hour is too cheap if the electrician has insurance & pays everything he is supposed to pay.
 
Can we get a list of extra's prior to making judgement of value for money. Also at what stage of the job were extra's requested? This can make a substancial difference to the cost.
