Electrical Fittings

Hi all, a few people have told us to specify MK electrical fittings when looking for quotes for electrics in a new build. Just wondering if you think this is necessary, and if so how much extra would you expect them to add. So far we have only got one quote for electrics, €10,000 +vat, but we didn't specify MK switchgear. Is it worth getting it revised?

Why MK brand specifically?!

That's what I want to know! Apparently they are "the best" and alot of the cheaper fittings don't last....to be honest I'm not convinced yet...hence I started this thread!

It depends on what you want. For standard plastic MK are pretty much the same as the others. As long as they are BS rated they should be ok. MK do an extensive range of upmarket fittings from brass to brushed chrome and stainless steel etc which are very good.

Two tips: if you are going for a lacquered steel or brass fitting make sure the electrician fits the thin strip of clear plastic that comes with them as this prevents moisture and acid from newly plastered walls from going into the fitting between the laquer and the metal and prevents discolouring. Most electricians throw them away.

Also even if you are going for plastic make sure the light switch wiring includes an earth wire. You dont need it for plastic but if you ever upgrade to metal its a hell of a job to run in the earth later.

Also make sure you use switched sockets . It saves plugging out things like TVs at night. Better still get a power light on the socket and you can see at a glance if its on or off.

From my own Experience I would recommend putting MK anywhere that gets a lot of use. ie a Kitchen or utility. I have often seen the cheaper models burn out through excess use. However anywhere like a bedroom for instance the cheaper model will suffice.
On another point. 10,000 seems quiet excessive. Is it a large house? I would certainly get at least three prices from compentant Electricians.

mk stuff is expensive, it is usually good, some contracts do specify mk material

I was 20 odd years in the electrical industry and believe Mk and Legrand's wiring accessory to be the best. You don't have the problems with these ranges you get with some of the cheaper stuff.

I would get a few quotes from different electrical wholesalers and make sure they are stockist as the wholesaler discounts from supplier can vary

whats a good quote for electrical work on a new build ? mine was 6000 + VAT for labour and materials.

€10,000 included all switchgear, sockets, light fittings and wiring. The house is 2900 sq ft bungalow. Quite alot of recessed lighting included and sensor lights in the hallway. Quote also includes wiring for an alarm, cabling for garden lighting, sensor lighting outside. Wall chasing isn't included. I went to this guy for a quote first as he is meant to me very good, and in fairness was very good going through the plans with us, but he is known to be on the expensive side alright. Haven't got anymore quotes yet, but have another couple recommendations that I will definitely be contacting

Certainly still sound expensive. Depending on the exact amount of work but Birroc's price is a bit more realistic. Maybe towards 8g side if you have a lot of work. Has he encluded a price for smart home wiring? At this price he surely did?

Yes. All new builds should be wired for this now. With centralised control over heating music etc. A definate must.
