Does anyone know why we were asked to put the three papers yesterday into the one ballot box, then the first thing that has to be done at the count centre is to separate them all. Couldn't they have a ballot box with multiple slots? Even if the odd one went astray, it would be a lot less work than separating every single one.

While I'm on a rant, good point in the same vein made by Carly Bailey of the Social Democrats. Why do we use so many schools as polling stations? She says that 60% of stations are schools. Parents have to arrange alternative childcare with the school being closed, the teachers still get paid adding to the expense of the whole exercise, and I believe that a lot of the officials on the day are teachers too getting paid on the double. Couldn't we use more community centres, sports halls and commercial venues?
 
but the teachers need a day off....they do work six months of the year you know.
 
Maybe the role of teacher should be expanded to being an election official as required. Instead of watching over the children all day, they would just have to watch over their parents as they voted?
 
You start the day by being at the vote station for 6.30am and cannot leave until after 10pm that night. 15.5 hours or longer if you have to wait for the boxes to be collected. Putting papers in 1 box is simply the most common sense because on counting day they need to have all papers from each school together on 1 table to first confirm that all cast votes are accounted for.

I presume you were being sarcastic there.
Teachers are employed to teach, not be election officials. Saturday voting is the solution.
 
I think the fear is that Student won't vote on Saturday (or maybe that they will vote on Saturday). Something like that anyway.
 
Bumping this as the election has been announced for SATURDAY 8th February.
FG looking to get votes from students & parents but they won't get any from teachers who lose out on their day off. Or something.
 
My mother always said " Be careful what you ask for, because you might get it." So we have an election on a Saturday. Ireland are playing Wales and there are some GAA matches on too. I'm just thinking of the George Hooks travelling to the rugby arena and planning to vote later. It will be interesting to see what amount of people don't vote.
 
Some interesting comments here. My parents were a one party couple and if FF put up a trained seal in Cork South Central they would have canvassed and voted for it. With my background in low level trade unionism my loyalty used to lean with Labour until I matured and saw that smoked salmon socialists were part of that party.

I note above that my ol' sparring partner Purple never voted for SF and would not vote for SF.This alone has the potential to send me in the direction of voting SF. He is entitled to his views and if everybody held those views they would never have voted for FF or FG either. There ain't much difference in the opening years of FF, FG, SF. The bottom line is these three political parties were founded and prospered on military action.

In Cork South Central this time we have three prospects to be Taoiseach amongst FG and FF. It is an interesting constituency with probably a Green candidate also plus a few also rans. I reckon the Greens are a danger to Ireland's future and could set the country back many years. My comments about the use of cloth nappies in another thread come to mind.

So where am I regarding the election:- I don't know the full field of candidates yet. But, for argument say there are 15; I'll start with my Number 15 vote and work my way down to Number 1. If I think any of them doesn't deserve a vote, then I'll start at my Number 14.

Cork North Central:- Wow! Here is a constituency worth watching - North City + Extensive Rural electorate.

I'm looking forward to the next 25 days of newspaper, radio, television coverage of the election. I have no doubt this forum will be to the fore too.

I'll never vote SF either*. There's so much wrong with your paragraph I don't know where to start.
Read this and tell me how it resembles the opening years of FF & FG.
