Hello all! The broad question I have is whether an Irish citizen can elect to have a medical procedure done in another EU country, and be reimbursed/covered for the cost by either the HSE/private medical insurance? and if so, how to go about it?. I am guessing the answer is not a straight yes or no, however I would appreciate any advise on where to begin or what is involved?
Thanks in advance!
Yes you can get treatment in other EU countries its called treatment abroad - the HSE have a web page outlining the guidelinehttps://www2.hse.ie/services/treatment-abroad-scheme/treatment-abroad-scheme.htmls
Its mainly for treatments not available here or treatments that have very long waiting lists and it has to be approved by a consultant before you can apply.
The scheme you are looking for is the hse cross border scheme.
Treatment abroad is only for procedures not available in Ireland. Cross border allows you to be reimbursed for procedures up to the same rate you would be charged in your resident country .
