Hi again, just a quick question. As you might know from all the threads, just moved into a new house after gutting it. Called Eircom to get connected. The phone line is coming into the house - grand. but we need to get a small junction box connected, they want to charge us 120euro for this! am i wrong to think this is outrageous?? i mean, we plan on being on a 60 euro tarriff per month and being there for a long time... any opinions anyone?
Is there not a standard connection fee? Unfortunately I presume that you still cannot shop around for a landline? Would any other alternative be open to you - e.g. using VoIP on cable or wireless broadband?

they would not be responsible for the box at the end of the line if you removed it for gutting the house.
I would recommend you try to attach a box yourself. It is only 2 wires and is not dangerous in any way as it is DC low voltage. If you then have a dial tone on the line but can not make calls then you will not have to pay the 120 as the line is in situ.
After that try and dial 1990000 (i think) if it reads back a number then there is still a phone attached to your line and so the reconnection should be free as an operator only has to push a button.
I had a very complicated permutation of the above and found the call center in Dublin the most rudest people ever. I had to pull some strings with friends in eircom to find out what had happened with my line. In the end a call center in Cork took 2 min to investigate the problem and it was sorted.
Yet another rant... we have gone with Eircom in the end but I was trying to get connected with BT but they refused my business because I refused to pay direct debit - have had bad experiences in the past with other companies... Just thought this was a bit ridiclous - thought they would be dying for new business!!
