Economical water heating

Recently I was having a debate with some friends about water heating (and we used to be bright young things but now debate energy options and the benefits of clingfilm vs tinfoil...anyway)...

I happened to mention that I leave my immersion on 'sink' all the time. My friends were horrified, yet I've never found my ESB bills too bad (€86 last two months, now with BG so should be cheaper). Could this really be increasing my bill by a lot?

We then debated whether to heat water by electricity or gas was cheaper. Anyone any idea? My electricity and gas are on different billing durations and I don;t know how I'd be able to accurately figure it out. It's probably be easier doing gas as they I could have it on a timer for the morning shower.

from this you can see that the unit cost of gas is 1/3 that of electricity....

also the delivered cost of gas is also roughly 1/3 that of electricity....
