Thanks so much for all your replies. A very good point about meeting neighbours every day, I never thought of that. Our current neighbours are really noisy (mostly screaming matches and the kids are woken up with a wall hammering from the parents rather than an alarm) although we only have the one side attached. I'll keep an eye out for families, there are also some town houses in the development, although on casual glance I didn't notice any car seats in the cars around. There's a balcony that could be used for a BBQ (I usually host a family one once a year), I must ask if this is allowed!
One big draw for me is that it's cheaper than a house of the same size (probably because of all of the above) so we will be able to take out a shorter term mortgage and be mortgage-free earlier and maybe be able to retire sooner but I don't want to take on a whole load of heartache in the mean time!
A few more things I have on the list to ask about: Sinking fund, maintenance fee breakdown (and what it covers), anti-social behavior, water pump, locals interaction with management company (e.g. residents association), owner-occupier numbers.
I'm going in with my eyes wide open now and will seriously weigh up the pros and cons. Thanks!
