double doors

Apologies in advance for sheer ignorance of how carpentry works . . . We've got a double door space between kitchen and family room

Have ordered two single doors for this space but just wondering how this will work in terms of opening and closing and fastening of the locking mechanism. Does one door use the other as an anchor and close into the other . . .

(its a general query so I don't look completely stupid when talking to carpenter tomorrow).

the doors you've ordered will have to be rebated - that means a section is taken from the edge of each one so that they close together flush, or one into the other, as you put it.. The carpenter will most likely have to take them away to a machine shop to have this done, probably cost about €30.
He'll know how to fit your locks etc.

What type doors did you order? Not all will be suitable for this application?

The rebate Jock04 mentions means anything but solid wood will not work.

I know what you mean, i'm having the same trouble, going around loads of door shops and hardly any of them will rebate them for me.
Am looking for a pair of white double doors, and cannot find anywhere where they come finished, just dont fancy the hassle of getting doors in one place, bringing them somewhere else to be rebated, and then bringing them home to paint them, all before I can get them hung. Anyone know anywhere where I could buy the finished product, never thought it would be so difficult to buy a pair of double doors!

Good point by Leo, I'd forgotten about "engineered" or "hollow core" doors, which may indeed be unsuitable for rebating.
Might be as well to check with the door supplier before they arrive. Just give them a call & ask if the doors you ordered are suitable for rebating.

Spurs - double doors don't usually come ready-rebated as in many cases the size of the doors may have to be adjusted slightly to fit the opening. Clearly, you'd want the doors to be reduced at both sides for appearance sake if nothing else.
Since most double doors are simply 2 singles, it wouldn't make sense to keep ready-rebated in stock, particularly in pre-finished style.

I had the same problem with 2 doors before what I did was fix 2 strips onto the edges to give them a rebate.

if your door happens to be say 42mm then the 2 strips should be 40 in total (ie 20mm each) and the 1mm should be on the outside of the door to give it a bit of detail.
