Dormant back boiler in fireplace?

Hi

What steps do you need to take in order to get an open fireplace with a dormant back boiler in behind it operational. I know this fireplace has not been lit in years and it would be great to be able to heat the radiators this way. I don't know if the back boiler is sealed up or connected to the water tank or what the story is. The house has oil fired central heating but I thought this could be put to use also. I heard it can be dangerous to light it and see though. Any advice appreciated.

Get a plumber to check it out. As you said lighting up an old appliance that has been left dormant could lead to catatrophic circumstances.
You may be better of installing a far more efficient stove/boiler and link it to your exixting heating system. This would be more cost effective in the long run once the linking is done properly. Search my previous posts on this matter.
