I have some internal doors that dont fit properly - not sure if over the years they have shrunk.

Anyway, at night if you leave the windows a jar on the landing and have wall vents open and its a bit breezy outside the doors rattle

Upshot is cant afford to replace them :)

Apart from replacing the doors, is there anything you can door with/to the doors to stop them rattling

Thanks

Wouldn't rush in to anything just yet. You may well find that when the central heating comes on shortly they will expand with the heat. You won't have the windows open as much in winter time so the rattling will stop ;)

Can you adjust the (brass) plate in the door jamb that the lock fits into with a screwdriver or chisel and a hammer?

This is common in non-engineered doors, where the timbers have completely dried out over a period, resulting in loose fitting.

Buy yourself a roll of self adhesive draught strip in any DIY store.

Fit a strip of it to the face of the doorstop timber, this will snug up the frame, tightening up the door when it is closed and help prevent rattling.

Just a point, if the heating is on you would expect the doors to shrink as moisture is lost.

The radiator in our hall is beside the hall door. When the central heating comes on in winter time the mahogony hall door always starts to stick presumably because it expands with the heat?

Central heating tends to dry air rather than add moisture, leading to more incidence of respiratory problems.

Higher moisture in the air outside could be causing the door or frame to expand slightly causing a rub point. It is seasonal variations causing the change in the door set as moisture is gained and lost from the wood fibres.

If you tell me its an internal hall door, I'm stumped !!
