When a self employed person makes a donation to a charity (church), Does the self employed person need to fill out any form apart from Form 11?. What form does church need to complete?. Does the church get any tax relief or is it just the self employed person?
 
It's just the self-employed person that gets the relief.

You need to get a receipt from the church with their registered charity number on it, in case the revenue ever come to check.

As you will be claiming relief as the self-employed, it enables you to give a bit more (a PAYE worker would be giving after tax money, so the charity can claim back the tax, a self-employed worker is giving pre-tax money, so can give a bit more depending on their tax rate).
 
For donations (individual or cumulative within the year) over €250 from PAYE earners the receiving charity can claim back tax that you have paid. Are you sure that the church in question is a charity? They should have a registered charity CHY number if they are. See [broken link removed] for more.
 
Thanks for that. Has already been claiming back tax from paye workers but they thought they could get some back from self employed workers as well. I felt they couldn't but thought i should double check. Thanks again

Churches & schools generally set up a charitable trust to become eligible for charity relief.
 
A further question in relation on this (Old) thread.
I am a PAYE worker (and therefore not a "chargeable person")and have donated to a registered charity. I understand that I can complete a CHY2 form and the charity can claim back the donation. However, do I have the option of not returning the form and then claiming the tax in my own right? I suspect not - for instance, there is no box on the Form 12 for this. However, if someone could confirm it would be great. I do appreciate that for self assessed taxpayers the situation is different.
 

If all of your income is totally dealt with through PAYE then you must use the CHY2 form.

If you are in any way self-assessed, e.g. self-employed or a proprietory director filing Form 11, then you return the details on the Form 11. You get the relief on the Form 11 on your year end taxes and you then should increase your donation by that amount to the charity.(I've notes from a school in front of me right now on this matter wher they clearly set out the procedure for each type of person.)
 
Is anyone aware of a way to claim tax relief on donations to a non-Irish (British in this case) registered charity ?

I'm PAYE but file a Form 11 each year.
