help my 4 year old samoyed won,t sleep in his kennel for love nor money .he sleeps on the roof of it .im terrified he,ll get sick.he used to sleep around the side of our house but grumpy aul bag next door kept letting him out on us so we had to move him to a new kennel in the back garden.he will go into it if we tell him too but just gets straight back onto the roof as soon as our back is turned.its been 6 weeks now. we also have been leaving our shed open for him but he preferes to sleep on the roof ,even in downpour

As long as he knows he has shelter if it rains really heavy whether it be the kennel or the shed then I wouldnt worry too much, he seems to like sleeping on the roof otherwise he wouldnt be doing it for 6 weeks!! Sounds like you have a bit of a cool dude there:)

If you dont mind me asking though, what do you mean your neighbour kept letting him out? Did they deliberately open your gate? I would be so annoyed with that!

You could try getting whatever he's supposed to be sleeping on and rub it all over him to put his scent on it. Then put it into the kennel, he might go in then. Is the area where the kennel is now an area he used to go to the toilet in? Dogs are strange but I wouldn't worry once he knows there's shelter there.

Sounds like a gas character! Why not put treats in there so he associates it with a good place to be? Chances are he just likes to see whats going on around him, and theres no better place to view from than the roof!!! if you can position the box so he can see everything (including the back door) he will probably more inclined to sit in it.

Samoyeds are funny creatures - mine sleeps under the bed! Try coaxing him in by placing a few of his favourite treats right at the back. I wouldn't worry too much about him getting sick by sleeping on the roof (and boy, would I love to see a picture of that!). Samoyeds are bred to withstand extremely cold conditions (hence the thick coat).

Oops - my advice about treats in the kennel crossed with Rory's.

thanks for all those replies we have his kennel on the decking near the back door .he used to sleep at the side of our house under a motorbike shelter but our neighbour used to purposly leave open the gate joining both houses.we,ve tried putting treats in the kennel but he just takes them out also we put mats with his own scent on them inside but no luck i think maybe rory22 is right he is just a gas charachter ha

Maybe your dog has been watching too many [broken link removed]

Our four year old Samoyed 'Sparky' loves to be outside late at night but he sleeps n our en suite bathroom, this is what he's used to so couldn't put him out now. Would you consider allowing him to sleep in the kitchen? These dogs get very lonely and bored easily and love human companionship.

Sparky loves the cool weather and would sleep in the rain if you let him

Maybe the dog is objecting to your typing skills. The mutt is confused by your reluctance to use a full stop and capital letter to begin the following sentence unlike the all of the posters who have been trying to console you in your hour of need. Bet you text good though!!!

It could be that he likes to sleep in the open air. Try a lean to shelter on the side of the shed maybe?
