Does a Chorus NTL tv box need a landline?

I am with Sky, the box has broken 'just' outside our warranty so its €100 to get an engineer out to fix it.
So I thought I may as well upgrade to Sky+ (advertised on the website as €99 + €45 installation)
However the actual cost is;
€149 For the box (as an existing customer I don't get the €99 price????)
€45 For installation
€37.50 Because we don't have a landline (nice little add on there?)
€231.50 in TOTAL

So I thought I'd look into UPC-Chorus-NTL, they dont answer their phone so I probably wouldn't go with them even if they were cheaper, but out of curiosity can anyone tell me;
Do you need a landline to get Chorus NTL TV?
Is there a map to show which areas they cover? Website is very vague.

No you don't need a phone line. Good luck with getting through to them on the phone it usally takes forever. You'll find lots of complaints on the web about their customer sevice.
 
I have digital basic broadband ultra and DVR / NTL box costing me about 70 quid a month.

Install was free free wireless router with the 12mb BB.

Took a while to get through to them, but once the engineer was organised he came on time and rang me to confirm. Seemed to know what he was doing.

Haven't had any problems over the last 6 months touch wood. So haven't had to call customer service.

After the initial pain good so far.
 
I found getting through to NTL/Chorus sales department no problem at all - phone answered after 2 or 3 rings. Of course thats when you want to give them money, surprise surprise! - but try getting through to their service department when you have a problem and you'll have a long wait!. I was on hold for 12 minutes last week trying to get through to them!
Luckily, I haven't had the need to ring them too much so its not too much of a problem.
I got a really good deal for my broadband, tele and phone service - €44 a month for everything.
 
try signing up through their website to avoid calls, you can even book the slot for installation. Even the contractor guy who came to connect me was complaining about getting through when he was on hold pending connection being completed.

LOL, customer service implies they answer the phone to you!! I suggest getting the basic chorus/NTL subscription and spend some time googling on how to improve it ;) ;)
 
I recently moved into a new home and got NTL installed .. what a load of crap if you ask me .... every now and again it just goes off .. my power line kept "frying" and had to get them out to my house on serveral occasions ... id seriously try avoid it .... i know next time i will
 
Hi All,

Update on me trying to find out if it's possible to get connected to Chorus NTL. So last Thurs 19th June, I tried to call the number on their web page, but couldn't get through for love or MONEY. I emailed them instead and got a reply saying I'd be contacted in the next 3 days. Yesterday, Tues 24th (5 days later) I got an email asking me to call 061 272198.

I called the above number, they don't have my address on their database, so they have to input my address and get back to me in 2 days.

Like some of you guys say if it's this difficult to get through to buy the service, who knows what will happen when you actually need some customer service.

I had the same problems initially getting on didn't have the address claimed it wasn't in.

Builder said it was they had paid a lot of money to get in as I suspected seeing as the ntl connection boxes were in.

The copped that the basic service was already on once I found a mssing splitter so left it and let them ring and sell it to me. Left me about 2 months free tv before they dropped the fliers in the door.

Managed to struggle through without the interweb.

Since then thankfully haven't had to ring them hopefully never will.

When the upgraded net speed was floating around ntl rang me trying to sign me up to a phone, so I stung the guy to then to switch me on.
