Do you know anything about lawn mowers?

My garden is one year old and now in need of a cut. It was mowed once last year and at the time I hired a petrol mower. I have a 0.66 acre garden. I don't know anything about lawn mowers and want to buy one.

What are the main things I should be looking for and are there any good vfm offers around.

Please note I'm on a three day working week (who isn't) so vfm is essential.

About 50 quid for a manual mower in B&Q. You'll get lots of exercise on a 0.66 acre garden! I have one but I only have a small garden...
Seriously though, seeing as you have such a big garden, the absolute minimum is a petrol powered mower (because an electrical one probably won't stretch far enough even with extension lead. As far as I know it's about 200-500 quid for these.

My sister recently bought a Husqvarna 21'' for 580 euro , and I believe Viking is also a good make ,.... here are the websites for Husqvarna :

Occasionally, and particularly at this time of year, you will find special offers of petrol lawn mowers from about 150 to 190 in Woodies, Lidl, Aldi, or even some Dunnes now. Most are pretty good quality, and, if maintained well, will last several years, depending on the amount of use. Woodies currently have a 40cm Petrol Rotary on their website fro 149.99.

I am no expert, but here are a few things to look out for:
get a four stroke (most are four stroke nowadays)
A rotary mower is more flexible than a cylinder mower. A cylinder mower will give you pretty lines, but the grass has to be almost dry, whereas you can cut damp grass with a rotary;
Try to get one with a Brigs & Stratton engine, which I have always found to be reliable.
With a .66 Acre garden, you will probably want to get a self-propelled, but that will cost more.

There are more and more lesser known brands (but with B&S engines) around these days it seems.

I think you should be able to get a self propelled B&S engined petrol mower in B&Q (NI) for no more than €300.

I'm currently on the look out for a new mower. My priorities are either a briggs & stratton engine or honda. The blade must be 18 inch or 46 cm. (makes for less walking up and down) and the box, preferably not hard plastic as I've had stones breaking through, must be capable of holding 50 lits. I expect to pay in the region of €280 to €320. My last mower was a rover b&s eng. great machine. I previously had a harry also good.

I had a look around today to see what was available for around 300 euros. There were 2 I thought were pretty good value.
1. Flymo Quicksilver Quattro 500 series from Homebase. 6 cylinder 46 cm rotary with B & S engine. 260 euros.
2. Prolawn 158cc from Woodies. 46 cm rotary with B & S engine 6 Hp. Guy in the shop was unsure if price was 299 or 249.
Both self propelled.

If anybody has any input on these?
