I got rid of my credit card last year. I don't miss it one bit. I actually feel freer without a CC.
You don't need them. you can use your debit card. You will still have the same charge back protection as the cards are issued by Visa/MasterCard. I've charged back twice on a debit card with no issue whatsoever.
I have hired car with my debit card a couple of times without issue
One or two moments of madness with a credit card can lead you to a lifetime of debt. They're a trap and It's called Mastercard for a reason - you don't need a CC
I don't recall them pre authorizing /debiting anything. They just took the amount owed when I hired the car. (Auto Resisen Lanzarote)
Yes, correct.I believe credit stamp duty is levied in advance in April so would I be correct in thinking there'd be no advantage in cancelling it before March 2021?
As a last resort I applied for a credit card with Avantcard which afforded me credit towards paying for a new roof AND at the time there was a 0% interest deal for 9 months if I transferred cash from the credit card to my current account
I've had a credit card in Ireland for 10 years and pay the government stamp duty every year.
However I've realized that I now rarely use it. I save money for holidays and have set up funds to cover medical expenses, house hold items replacement etc. I also have a 6 month emergency fund fund should I loose my job. Basically I don't need the credit.
Previously I used use a cc for booking flight or accommodation but it seems current debit cards all work online now (at least my kbc and revolute does).
There doesn't seem to be any perks or extra protection available from them like in Nort American.
Is there any benefit in missing?
Better insurance cover- some offer travel insurance included, and most offer better come back, with if dealing with a vendor, who either fails to deliver, or, as is more frequent these days, a vendor who goes into liquidation. A work colleague got caught when Wizz Air collapsed, they used a debit card, they received no refund, if they had used a credit card, they would have.
I tried to cancel my credit card online last August. Rarely use it but had the same mindset as you. I was advised by the rep to ensure all outstanding commitments were paid , including the Government fee. This fee had only just been debited in July. I recently discovered(my own fault) that the account had not been closed, and not they insist of paying the €30 levy again as the billing period is July to July. Dirty rotten thievesI've recently been billed for the €30 credit card stamp duty, which has prompted me to question whether having a credit card is necessary again.
I make one or two purchases a month, which are paid off immediately.
To date, my rationale for having a credit card is for two reasons:
To maintain a credit record if I ever need to borrow money again (unlikely)
For a preauthorisation when hiring a car
I would cancel the credit card if the above reasons were unfounded.
I have EUR and GBP Visa Debit cards and a virtual Revolut card.
Can anyone advise on this?
